Tips From Your Thrift Big Sis: Apparel You Should Be Thrifting This Winter
I can’t believe it's already the last month of the year! Cold weather season is here and with the first day of winter only being 2 weeks away, I wanted to share some helpful thrift tips. It's with no surprise that winter apparel is relatively pricier than other seasonal apparel. A brand new winter coat can cost an arm and a leg, especially when buying for more than one person. Thrifting winter apparel is cost efficient, practical and believe it or not, there is an abundance at thrifts during this time of the year, so you're likely to find something for you or a loved one.
Start with the basics — Coats
Did you know that most thrift stores select items to put on the floor by season? In the winter, you can easily spot jackets and coats arranged on the racks. Some thrifts have them sorted by length and style-- making it easier for you to select which is best for you. I typically look for the same type of coats yearly such as: trench coats, camel coats, leather jackets and vintage parkas. What's your prefered style for a winter coat?
Keep it cozy — Sweaters
I absolutely love thrifting sweaters. I typically thrift sweaters throughout the year but I tend to find the more unique ones in the fall and winter. If you think about it, that's usually the time that people are getting rid of their unwanted sweaters and donating them to thrift stores. Remember, one man's trash is another's treasure! In the winter, I'm on the lookout for cozy fabrics such as: cashmere, wool and cotton. I also keep an eye out for festive sweaters like holiday sweaters, embroidered and patterned sweaters to name a few.
A winter aesthetic — Skirts
Skirts are such a lovely staple to a winter outfit. There's an array of skirts at thrifts, increasing the likelihood of you finding the perfect one to add to your winter wardrobe, that is timeless and aids in versatile styling. My favorite thrifted skirt is a tan suede asymmetrical skirt with fringe, featured in my most recent instagram post! I almost collapsed when I spotted it and eyeballed it to make sure it was my size. I encourage you to keep these types of skirts on your thrift list: plaid skirts, tweed skirts, full length skirts, knitted skirts and leather skirts. Just imagine pairing a full length plaid skirt with a turtleneck— such a chic work look! Style a leather skirt with tights and booties for date night or a girls night out.
Let's elevate — Accessories
People often forget to thrift winter accessories and I don't want you to miss! Some of my best and high quality gloves and scarves have been thrifted. My favorite thrifted gloves are warm, ribbed and tech friendly, making it simple to use my iPhone while wearing them. Just recently, I spotted a variety of beautiful leather gloves-- black, brown and cognac. Leather gloves are luxurious so go and thrift you a pair!
Good for the sole — Boots
You can't get through winter without a pair of quality boots. I'm not going to lie, thrifting footwear is a controversial topic and it can be a hit or miss. I have found designer boots, trendy booties and UGG boots at the thrift. It doesn't hurt to just browse through the shoe section and see what you find. You just never know what you'll score and the impressive condition it may be in, just for you!
I hope these tips were helpful for you. If you don't have time to thrift winter apparel, that's snow problem! Fill out a personal thrift survey so I can select and style winter apparel for you!
